Fallout 3 #1: Escape to Megaton!

Hey guys, I’m back today with the first in my series of posts about Fallout 3! As you may have read in an article I posted a few days back, I’ve discovered a love for this game and even though it’s quite old I am very excited to complete a play-through of it. I am totally knew to this whole genre of blog posting so bear with me as I figure this all out!

*Just in case you haven’t played before but might want to, there may be a spoiler or two below!*

So, this is how I started my Fallout adventure!

Settings and Mods

I play Fallout (GOTY Edition) on Normal using a DS4 controller. I use the FOOK2 Overhaul and mods which I love mostly for the weapon overhaul which I’ll go into more detail about soon. Just note that some of what I find and use won’t be available on console versions. I did use Fellout before but honestly, nothing needs to be that dark at night.

I use Fraps to take screenshots of my gameplay and to keep check of my frame-rate which is usually around 60 fps.

You’re S.P.E.C.I.A.L!

Strength: 7
Perception: 6
Endurance: 5
Charisma: 6
Intelligence: 7
Agility: 6
Luck: 3

As I’m a novice at gaming in general, I like to have quite even S.P.E.C.I.A.L stats to give my character quite an all round/ average build. The exception to this is Luck where I usually give it about 3 as I don’t feel like luck is the most important thing for my character.

I like my Strength and Intelligence to both be slightly higher than the rest and Perception at 6 usually helps me out a lot in dialogue.

Vault Life

After my character was created, and I chose my starting S.P.E.C.I.A.L came a small insight into life as a vault dweller. The Lone Wanderer’s 10th birthday party is an… Interesting affair to say the least. The Overseer armed with a Pip-Boy 3000 warns you of your duties in the vault now that you’ve come of age. What a gobshite. Your friend Amata gives you a Grognak the Barbarian magazine (which I usually take right away so I don’t forget).

Butch, the little brat tries to beat you up for a sweetroll from Old Lady Palmer; What kind of party is this? Such a weird atmosphere down in the vault.

After conversing with all of the guests in the vault, you then get to go down to the Reactor level to learn how to shoot using a BB gun and you even get to kill a cheeky Radroach.

The G.O.A.T

After  your birthday party, time skips forward a few years and you find yourself being examined by James. He insists you go to take the G.O.A.T exam and eventually you do. What I like to do here is take the Medicine Bobblehead on his desk right now, just incase I don’t get the chance to go back in for it later!

Not taking the Bobblehead is a huge mistake as it brings your Medicine up by 10.

Then, I usually go up to the teacher and choose the last option in the dialogue test “I don’t really need to take this stupid test, do I?” and you can then choose your own 3 main skills for the game.

I chose Small Guns, Sneak and Speech as my three. I have always got by well with high speech and I love killing unsuspecting enemies with sneak. I use small guns mostly so that was a vital skill to tag. I next to never use unarmed or melee combat (I’m just so totally average at playing).

Leaving the Vault.

So now the shit’s hit the fan. Amata has woken you up to the news that your dad has fled the vault and people are looking for you. She gives you a gun and you decide to escape. As you leave the vault you encounter many Radroaches and security personnel.

Interestingly, a scene plays out involving two other vault dwellers that want to escape. They make a run for it and if you follow where they went, two security guards become hostile towards you.

You also encounter Butch here, begging for help as Radroaches attack his mother. I use my Speech to get Butch to kill them himself. He will find you a minute or so later, call you his best friend and you get his Tunnelsnake outfit!

As you get nearer to the Overseer’s office, you will see him and a security guard interrogate Amata. I usually go in and take them both out. The overseer has his terminal password and his office key.

Eventually you find Jonas, killed and with a note for you from Dad. I go to the overseer’s office from there and open secret stairway. When  you get down to the Vault entrance you meet Amata again, followed by two more security guards. Once they go you are totally free to leave!

Outside the Vault.

The view outside the vault is as stunning as it is creepy. You can see what remains of the Washington Monument in the far distance. I leveled up here and chose my first Perk, Swift Learner which grants slightly higher XP.

The first place I came across was Springvale, I searched the remains of houses and looted some Nuka Colas from a vending machine. I didn’t go the Elementary School yet as I like to have leveled up a few times first. I then entered a house where I was met by Scarlet. I pretended to know Moriarty and took 400 caps from her, just cause.

I then headed on to Megaton!

fallout - 3

I entered Megaton and went straight to Moira to grab her Quest, Wasteland Survival Guide which will be the topic of my next Fallout post!

Got an opinion? Let me know in the comments!
